Mario Infantes Talks ‘Streams’ and Upcoming Album ‘Bitácora’

Mario Infantes has been on a journey, geographically, musically, emotionally, and his upcoming album ‘Bitácora’ feels like a snapshot of all the places he’s landed along the way.

Based in Iceland after cutting his teeth in Spain and fronting the ferocious Cult of Lilith, Mario’s solo work pulls from a different well entirely. There’s still power in the vocals, but now it’s filtered through a wider lens, pulling in folk traditions, cinematic swells, and a global palette of sounds that move well beyond anything you might expect from a metal pedigree.

The second album feels more like a beginning than a continuation. ‘Bitácora’ drifts through styles, collecting fragments along the way. Traditional instruments like the oud and duduk sit next to sweeping orchestration and layered vocals that sound like they’re echoing off the walls of a cave. There’s a real sense of openness here, of collaboration and trust in the process. Mario’s voice is still front and center, but this time it’s part of a much bigger picture, one that is less about control and more about discovery. The result is an album that feels lived-in and searching, less like a statement and more like an invitation. Today brings the release of the second single from the upcoming album, ‘Bitácora’. Titled ‘Streams,’ it offers another glimpse into the expansive world Mario Infantes is building. The full record arrives July 14, 2025 on Lost Future.

“Art imitates life”

The shift from your other band’s sound to your solo work feels like a pretty big jump. How do you think this new record reflects where you are now as a musician?

Mario Infantes: I would say that my essence remains pretty much untouched, but I have just travelled to more places musically, physically and mentally, and this album is a reflection of that, a dxsjournal where I share my stories and experiences. Some of the sounds in this album will be familiar to the old fans, and some others will definitely surprise them.

How much of the new album is shaped by where you’ve been, and how much of it feels like a fresh start?

That is a great question! I believe it’s a bit of both. It’s shaped by where I’ve been, but this album feels like a completely new way to tell my story. So, for me, it does not feel like a fresh start since all the influences I display in this album have always lived within me, but it might feel new and surprising for fans.

You’ve got a lot more collaborators on this album than the previous solo one. How did that come about?

My first album ‘Antidote to a Turbulent Mind’ was not originally conceived to be an album at all. It was my way of dealing with the heavy anxiety I was facing back then, when my band decided to stop, and I felt the need to do it alone. For this album, the feeling was completely different. I actually consider ‘Bitácora’ to be my actual first solo album, since I think it portrays all my influences and my artistic essence in a more accurate way. I’ve always loved collaborating with other musicians, and I thought this record is the perfect vessel for that.

There’s always a fine line between power and emotional depth in your music. How do you manage that balance? Do you consciously try to find that equilibrium?

Yeah, for me, art imitates life, and I am constantly trying to find that balance both in life and in my music. I think the music one writes is a healthy way to channel the artist’s struggles.

With the new album dropping this summer, what can fans expect in terms of the feel of the record? Are you experimenting more this time around? What direction does this one take that might surprise people who loved your debut?

This album has nothing to do with the first record. I think it’s a major step forward in almost every sense, and it portrays my artistic essence better. If you appreciate music that does not stick to a particular genre, just like life takes us in so many different paths, we never spend our entire lives doing the exact same thing and feeling the same feelings. My music tries to explore different worlds, emotions, cultures and sounds. If you are an open-minded individual, I believe you will really enjoy this ‘Bitácora’.

Beyond how it’s received, what do you want to prove to yourself with this record?

I want to prove that there are millions of ways of creating art. As an artist, you do not have to stick to a particular genre, you do not have to follow patterns and create in conventional ways. In a world where creativity loses value more and more, and most people are trying to copy each other in the hopes of getting noticed, I think this album will be a bliss of fresh air. Music and art are infinite—the possibilities are endless.

Thank you. Last word is yours.

I hope you enjoy ‘Bitácora.’ It’s my best and most personal musical work to date, full of contrasts and incredible stories, a sonic adventure which will hopefully make you feel a wide spectrum of emotions.
