Lazy Lazarus Turns Heartbreak into a Synth-Pop Daydream

A synth beams in like a shaft of light through a foggy window. It’s a strange way to start a song about mourning, but that’s kind of the point. ‘My Doomed Friend,’ the latest from Florence’s Lazy Lazarus, doesn’t follow the usual rules.

It’s a track that feels both bright and heavy, like a late-night memory flashing back in neon. There’s something oddly uplifting in the way it moves, like a sad thought you can almost dance to.

Lazy Lazarus dropped his debut album ‘Spilt Milk’ back in May on Jipo Records. That record was all over the map in the best way, pulling from 60s pop, slacker indie, lo-fi electronics, psych, soul, and jazz. This new single keeps that collage-like spirit alive, mixing nostalgia with something that feels weirdly futuristic.

“You used to be good to your friends / Then you locked yourself up / You’ve been far from the things that you love.” That line hits at the heart of it. The song isn’t really about what we’ve lost, it’s about what we push away. And even though it’s a heavy thought, the track doesn’t wallow. It lifts. It lets a little light in.

There’s a video too, directed by Noplanetishome. You never see the musicians’ faces, just their shadows playing against a blank wall. It’s simple and strangely comforting, like knowing your friends are still around, even if you can’t quite reach them.
