‘La Gata’ by Mortòri | New EP, ‘A Mort L’ Amur’
Aris Bassetti, the creative force behind Mortòri, steps further into the spotlight with ‘La Gata,’ the second single from his upcoming debut EP ‘A Mort L’ Amur’ (Death to Love).
Set for release on Valentine’s Day 2025 via On the Camper Records, this project is a deeply personal exploration of love’s harsher realities, delivered through the fading Ticino dialect—a language on the brink of vanishing.
‘La Gata’ isn’t your typical crooner’s ode to passion. It’s a jagged, heart-wrenching reflection on rejection and self-perceived inadequacy. The narrative unfolds in stark, intimate details: her entrance, a gaze that drifts elsewhere, and the crushing realization of being invisible. With biting honesty, Mortòri captures this universal yet deeply personal moment of disillusionment, distilling it into a phrase that becomes a bitter refrain: “Tal disi mi, l’è propri inscì” (“I’m telling you, it’s really like this”).
The track’s rhythm mirrors the protagonist’s inner turmoil—staccato, fragmented, like a restless mind struggling to reconcile the gap between desire and reality. The titular “Gata” exudes an almost primal confidence, contrasting sharply with the narrator’s gnawing insecurities. Beauty, here, is less a source of admiration and more a reminder of the emotional distance from what feels unattainable.
Musically, ‘La Gata’ is as inventive as it is raw, blending avant-garde structures with a haunting intimacy that keeps the listener tethered to every syllable. Mortòri’s use of the Ticino dialect gives the song an added layer of poignancy, rooting its emotional narrative in a cultural context that feels both deeply local and universally resonant.
This project isn’t just about love or its absence—it’s a reclamation of a vanishing language, a bid to preserve its sounds and stories in a contemporary setting. Known for his work with Peter Kernel, Camilla Sparksss, and Kety Fusco, Bassetti channels his considerable creative energy into Mortòri, crafting songs that sit at the intersection of the personal and the experimental.
Recorded at La Tessinoise in Arbedo, Switzerland, and polished by a team of seasoned engineers in Italy, ‘La Gata’ offers an evocative preview of what ‘A Mort L’ Amur’ promises to deliver: a kaleidoscope of emotions, intricately woven into the fabric of a disappearing dialect.
