‘Ni Nuit Ni Jour’ | La Cozna’s Bold Fusion of Tradition and Modernity
The French experimental folk group La Cozna has just launched their remarkable debut album, ‘Ni Nuit Ni Jour,’ under the labels Raffut Collectif/L’autre Distribution.
This album showcases a unique blend of contemporary music with traditional French folk songs, offering a rare sonic boldness.
Formed in 2021, La Cozna (which means “the kitchen” in the Savoyard dialect of the French Alps) was initiated by Clémentine Ristord, who plays the bass clarinet, saxophones, and boîte à bourdon (a type of hurdy-gurdy). She is joined by Pierre-Antoine Despatures (double bass, percussion), Clémence Baillot d’Estivaux (vocals, cello), and Benjamin Garson (guitars).
The group breathes new life into traditional French songs from the 20th century, originally sung in the intimate settings of kitchen corners. These women’s songs recount tales of love, violence, and freedom, overcoming oppression with humor, drama, and poetry. La Cozna’s aim is to create a contemporary repertoire with a political edge, resonating with modern feminist struggles, while amplifying the voices of marginalized rural women, brought to life through the ethereal vocals of Clémence Baillot d’Estivaux.
