The debut solo album is a lyrical post-punk work characterized by her emotive voice, reminiscent of Beth Orton and Kristin Hersh. Michal Gutman is a multi-talented musician, performing solo with a bass guitar, loop station, two mics, and a touch-pad synthesizer. Her music blends harmony and dissonance, evoking a theatrical, edgy cabaret, an ’80s club dance floor narrative, and a dreamy soundtrack, all while exploring polyrhythms and contradictory loops to expand sonic boundaries.

Gutman’s new album, ‘Never Coming Home,’ evokes the homesickness of a shipwreck survivor—a unique kind of crowded solitude, where one sings to their ghosts about freedom. This marks her first solo album after a decade with her band Whaling Snails, which produced two albums, ‘Songs For Yael’ (2015) and ‘The Wind Around Your Heart’ (2019), and two years of intensive solo performances, developing the material for ‘Never Coming Home.’
