‘Kinnery of Lupercalia: Buell Legion’ by Slim Cessna’s Auto Club | Album Premiere

Approaching their 32nd year in the music industry, Slim Cessna’s Auto Club is set to unveil their latest album on May 31st. This LP marks the second installment of a trilogy that commenced with ‘Kinnery of Lupercalia: Undelivered Legion’ by Munly & The Lupercalians. Inspired by Munly J. Munly’s writing, ‘Kinnery of Lupercalia: Buell Legion’ aptly embodies the collective artistry that defines the Denver sound. Munly J. Munly elucidates, “This album achieves a harmonious blend between our studio recordings and our live performances.”
In this new chapter of the trilogy, Munly narrates the saga of the Buells, a legion directly descended from the Northrops-Petr & The Wulf. Embarking on an existential odyssey through a mythical realm, listeners encounter creatures steeped in dread and lineage, pursuing their desires despite their instincts. Munly reflects, “The Buells, stemming from the Northrops, embody the essence of the miserable Three Hunters. SCAC embodies the Buells, presenting a more sociable and unrestrained demeanor compared to other Legions of Lupercalia.”
Crafting the framework of their forthcoming record amidst the pandemic, Munly shared his vision with the band members, his creative kin, who collaborated on arrangements and infused their interpretations into the material. Drawing inspiration from apocalyptic tales of an unfamiliar world, the band, as Andrew Warner puts it, found solace in music creation amidst global turmoil: “While the world was unraveling, I found solace in shaping various iterations of these songs with input from the band. So, I owe my relative sanity to this album, I suppose.”
The addition of George Cessna on baritone bass injected fresh melodic sensibilities into Andrew Warner’s drum compositions, while Rebecca Vera’s sonic landscapes, enriched by pedal steel and keyboard textures, added depth to the overall atmosphere.
Rebecca remarks, “This album further immerses listeners in the diverse cast of Lupercalia characters through new voices and soundscapes, yet maintains the distinct essence of Slim Cessna’s Auto Club.”
Munly J. Munly expressed his elation, stating, “After I heard the new SCAC album completed I am certain that I saw rainbows overtake the skies. I can only assume that unicorns have grown new horns. Everyone who was a part of this tremendous feat deserves a blue ribbon-exclamation point!”
Dwight Pentacost shared his excitement, remarking, “I think that this is one of our greatest albums, and I am thrilled to share it with everyone. Wonderful stories and words by Munly; soaring vocals by Slim and everyone else backing up; swirling, psyched-out, often blistering musical performances (wait till you hear Rebecca playing the pedal steel on ‘Lessing,’ for instance)… The rhythm section of Andrew, George and Munly have produced some of my favorite all-time Auto Club moments here… What else can I say? The band worked hard on this one, and I hope that the listener will be pleased.”
Navigating the challenge of crafting music that seamlessly serves the overarching narrative as a conceptual whole, the band’s collective effort solidified their cohesion in a creative sense. Dwight Pentacost reflects on the journey, affirming, “After countless listens during recording and mixing sessions, my enduring enthusiasm for these tracks signals their success.
