‘Kikiyon’ by Gooseberry | New Album, ‘All My Friends Are Cattle’
Exclusive video premiere of ‘Kikiyon’ by Gooseberry, taken from the upcoming album, ‘All My Friends Are Cattle,’ set for release on September 6, 2024.
Brooklyn’s Gooseberry, a trio formed in 2019, is making waves with their unique blend of alternative rock, indie, and blues. The band—composed of Asa Daniels (guitar, vocals), Evin Rossington (drums), and Will Hammond (bass)—has captured the attention of the NYC music scene, with performances at hotspots like Baby’s All Right and the Knitting Factory.
Following the success of their 2023 EP, ‘Validate Me,’ Gooseberry announced their debut full-length album, ‘All My Friends Are Cattle’. The first single from the album, ‘Kikiyon,’ channels heavy 90s alt-rock vibes while tackling significant themes. With sharp guitar riffs and powerful drumming, the track is a direct challenge to judgmental attitudes and societal pressures. Asa Daniels, the band’s frontman, reflects on his personal connection with Jewish culture, addressing the importance of self-identity in a world rife with antisemitism and geopolitical tension.
In a recent statement, Daniels commented on the underlying message of ‘Kikiyon’: “My faith—or something like it—might waver, but we’re all just dirt and worms. We should spend less time arguing about trivial matters and more time building community.” To balance the intensity of the track’s themes, the accompanying music video, directed by Charlie Hull, embraces a lo-fi aesthetic with a humorous zombie-bird twist. Daniels added, “We knew we had to match the heaviness of the song with a ridiculous concept, and what better than a video about magical bird-zombie transformations?”
Gooseberry’s latest offering is a striking mix of thought-provoking lyrics, heavy riffs, and playful visuals, positioning the band as one to watch in the evolving alt-rock scene.
