Los Saints | Interview | “You can dance and cry to our music”

San Diego’s Los Saints is a fantastic alternative rock trio that has a set of fantastic singles out.

It’s fun, it’s melancholic and it’s danceable all at the same time. The band’s garage rock sound is mixed with jangle pop of the 80s. The band was founded in Chula Vista at the end of 2018. This indie/alt trio features all first-generation Mexican-Americans, including frontman Angel Mariscal, guitarist Gianluca Exposito, and drummer Emiliano Garcia. Enjoy the melodic haze of Los Saints.

“You can dance and cry to our music”

Is this your first band?

Yes it is, first and only.

When and where did the band form? Is this a relatively new project?

Angel Mariscal: We began forming really from mid to the end of 2018. First, the band was just made up of me and Emi, with me having about a year or two experience creating music on Ableton, and a few months experience actually jamming with my cousin/drummer Emi. At some point, we went on a small break from jamming, so I stayed home and made tracks such as ‘As Bad As The First’. After I made some tracks and showed them to Emi, he showed them to his friend Gianluca and we had become a three piece and I released me and Emi’s timeline songs and our first three piece song ‘I’m In Need’ in 2020.

How would you describe your sound?

Melancholy? This is actually the first time where I explain our sound as best I ever have, so even though I’m still learning what it is, I’m a really pensive guy, in my own head a lot everywhere I go but it doesn’t mean that I hide behind my emotions or thoughts. That’s what I try to translate into our music. I.e. you can dance and cry to our music! Listen to the lyrics and cry, listen to the entirety of it and cry! But also dance.

How do you usually approach songwriting?

An idea comes at the most random times which is why phones are awesome. I could be anywhere, have an idea with a bass line, drums, whatever other melodies come to mind including vocal melody and I use my phone to record the idea by humming it out and translate that onto my computer. Other times, trying to make a song while I’m on Ableton is intentional. The songs might not always be about something current, but it could be something that happened a while ago but I still remember the emotions I felt when it happened.

What are some of your main influences?

I grew up listening to all kinds of music, but I give 91x tons of credit for the type of music they played that inspired me over time. I mean I listened to the station for years since that’s what my dad listened to as well. They played everyone from Smashing Pumpkins to my favorite band Cage The Elephant.

Any plans for shows?

At the moment we’re recording new music all throughout July, but after recording is over, we’re lining up for shows all around San Diego!
