Wallners | Interview | ‘Dracula’ Live at Donauhof, Vienna
Viennese band Wallners’ latest Single ‘Dracula’ cast a long shadow over late summer. Kicking off the spooky season, Wallners recently released an eerie live video that not only visually underpins ‘Dracula’ but also shows that Wallners are a live band you don’t want to miss out on.
The band also recently released their debut EP, ‘Prolog I’. This band consisting of siblings are creating a dreamy indie pop full of mellow riffs perfect for the upcoming winter months.
You dropped the ‘Dracula’ single a few days ago. Tell us about it; what inspired this track?
The inspiration for the theme of the track really came from the musical idea of the track itself. We did a jam session late at night and somehow managed to catch and record this particular mood.
The next day, when listening to the track, the gloomy mood inspired us to write the lyrics and this way the title of the song unfolded. The lyrics came about pretty quickly; it actually didn’t feel like we were in control of the song but rather the other way around.
What do you want people to take away from the song?
When creating the track we had the vision of lyrically and musically painting a portrait of the Dracula character. If the listeners can just feel and listen to the character’s voice and get caught in its world we’re more than happy.
“‘Dracula’ definitely opened a few doors into a darker vibe of our music”
Are you working on an album as well? If so, how does ‘Dracula’ fit into the bigger picture of the new album?
Well we’re right in the middle of writing new songs and an album seems like a really cool thing we always wanted to do, but let’s see what the future holds. ‘Dracula’ definitely opened a few doors into a darker vibe of our music and shaped other ideas, however every song has its own place and soul.
It’s not often that there are four siblings forming a band. What do you think are advantages vs. disadvantages when it comes to music making? How do you usually approach songwriting?
One of the upsides is certainly that we know each other so well and can communicate or understand one another quite naturally. Also making music together feels quite familiar to us. A downside can be that we know each other so well that sometimes it’s hard to stay organized.
All of your music videos are very well done.
‘Dracula’ was shot in 2-3 different locations which really suited the whole vibe of our Dracula idea. Rupert Höller once again managed to create something very unique and beautiful. We loved his selection of the cast and how he totally captured the dark and psychedelic vibe of the song. When he showed us the final version of the music video we were thrilled. It has a lot of connection to the prior videos he made with us and it is based on a very modern and interesting idea concerning the question of how the Dracula persona could be interpreted in the modern world. Also it nearly reminded us of a short film- we love that the narrative perspective is such an important part of the video.
If you could only spin one record for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Too hard to answer- even though we could probably agree on some of our favorite records, we could hardly agree on the same one for the rest of our lives.
How are you coping with the current pandemic and what are your predictions for the future?
It’s really hard to make a prediction for the future, but I think we all hope this situation will come to some sort of an end. The pandemic for sure taught us to really seize the day, try to live life to its fullest and treasure the time we have with our family and friends.
What’s next for your band?
We’re currently working on new tracks and can’t wait to share them with you all. Also we’re really looking forward to starting doing live shows with time and getting our songs out on stage.
Thank you. Last word is yours.
Thanks a lot for the interview, we hope you enjoyed getting a little glimpse into our world and hope you are all safe and well.
