Blessed Child Opera | ‘The Traveler Challenges Death’ | Full Album Stream
Italian musician Paolo Messere has a new Blessed Child Opera album coming out on October 23 through Seahorse Recordings.
Today we’re pleased to share ‘The Traveler Challenges Death’ in full, a few days ahead of its official release.
Messere has been making music under the Blessed Child Opera name since 2001. Before that, he fronted the noise-rock band Silken Barb and played guitar and keyboards with Ulan Bator during their ‘Ego/Echo’ tours. He’s released quite a few records over the years, moving between dark folk, post-punk and more experimental sounds. His previous album, ‘Red Flags’, appeared in March 2025.
The new album began taking shape in early 2024. Messere wrote more than seventy song sketches before settling on the eleven that appear here. He recorded and produced the material himself at Seahorse Studio in Sicily between 2025 and 2026, playing guitar, keyboards and sampler alongside his vocals. Matteo Anelli contributed drums.
There’s quite a bit of personal reflection in these songs. ‘I Feel Like I Don’t Feel (Nostalgia)’ is about waiting for a birthday message from someone you once loved, while ‘One Less Reason Not to Try Again’ deals with falling in love and being willing to give it another go. The earlier single ‘I Will No Longer Be Here’ takes on questions of belief, solidarity and going against the crowd.
The music still has much of the dark folk and post-punk character of Messere’s earlier recordings, with some Middle Eastern influences finding their way into the arrangements. He also feels something has changed in his singing. As he puts it, “My singing seems to have uncovered a new part of me.”
