Galaxy Rockers Interview | Fluorescent Rock from Belgium’s Youngest New Band
Galaxy Rockers are four teenagers making fluorescent rock music. Their debut 7-inch, ‘Akademie / Oude Auto’, is out now.
Who are Galaxy Rockers?
We are Galaxy Rockers, four teenagers making music together in our mother tongue. With sunglasses, stardust, fiery sounds and youthful energy, this band wants to show what it can do on stage. Fluorescent rock music, with sugar peaks and valleys.
In September last year, we were selected as the only teenage band for VI.BE’s Sound Track. This led us to play at Wintercircus and sent us into a creative whirlwind, resulting in our first 7-inch vinyl.
When did you start Galaxy Rockers?
In September 2023, we found forgotten instruments in the attic and started jamming. GG, then nine years old, went for bass, her brother Remo chose drums, and neighbour Moonman soon joined on a borrowed guitar. Later, Bessie Laturnus completed the band on keys.
We love energetic music, but that doesn’t mean the lyrics can’t carry a message. New songs often emerge from jams that we remix and try to distil to their essence. We sometimes philosophise for a long time about the lyrics until we find the right themes, imagery and phrases.
Why do you sing in Dutch?
For us, Dutch is the most direct way to tell our story. It is also the only language we truly master, given our young age. The current average age of the band is 12.
