Myra Lee Share New Single ‘Corkscrew Drawers’ From Debut Release ‘Capture The Flag’
Brooklyn alt-rock trio Myra Lee have shared ‘Corkscrew Drawers’, the third single from their debut release, ‘Capture The Flag’, out June 26 on digital streaming platforms.
The band, formerly known as Dino Expedition, take their name from Cat Power’s 1996 album ‘Myra Lee’. The lineup is Tahlia Amanson on vocals and guitar, Aiden Velazquez on bass and McCabe Teems on drums. Their music draws from 1990s indie rock, with references that include Yo La Tengo, Pavement, Electrelane and Sonic Youth.
‘Corkscrew Drawers’ follows the earlier singles ‘Magpie’ and ‘Dean’. The new track is one of the more personal songs on ‘Capture The Flag’. It links the image of wine corks kept in a kitchen drawer with Amanson’s memories of alcoholism in her family and a difficult period in her relationship with her mother.
Like the rest of the record, the song keeps the arrangement close and direct. It pairs Amanson’s vocals with layered guitars and strings, giving the track a quiet weight rather than a loud dramatic push.
‘Capture The Flag’ was recorded over two days in a basement studio on the Lower East Side. The band tracked six songs live with engineer Jeremy Harris, whose credits include Devendra Banhart, Hand Habits and Allegra Krieger. The sessions were later mixed and mastered in Memphis by Calvin Lauber, who has worked with Boygenius and Julien Baker.
The album deals with alcoholism, sexuality, grief and memory. With ‘Corkscrew Drawers’, Myra Lee continue to introduce ‘Capture The Flag’ through songs that are personal, plainspoken and rooted in the band’s loose, guitar-led sound.
