‘Jimmy Needs The Money’ by Fixtures | New Album, ‘Hollywood Dog’

Exclusive video premiere of ‘Jimmy Needs The Money’ by Fixtures, taken from the upcoming album, ‘Hollywood Dog,’ out February 24th, 2023 via Bobo Integral and Naturally Records.

There’s a growing resurgence of slacker-ism. With the world in a confusing, messy, and dark state, many artists are rejecting the deceptive sheen of Instagram filters. Bands are once again taking a ramshackle approach to songwriting. Brooklyn’s Fixtures have blessed us with a noisy, exuberant slacker anthem with their newest single ‘Jimmy Needs The Money.’

Fixtures exist somewhere in the venn diagram of power pop, post punk, and indie rock. One review of their 2020 EP ‘Weak Automatic’ heralded the band as “an unholy collision of Television, Ramones, Dino Jr. and The B-52s.” As a six-piece group, Fixtures are able to fill their songs with a wide variety of sounds.

This new single opens with the line “I’m spending time on the A-train / I’m past all the stops / I don’t wanna get off.” As guitar feedback swells into a fuzzy, messy lead, Fixtures lead us into a song that feels simultaneously like an acknowledgement of life’s drudgery and a celebration of that same drudgery. Crashing choruses ascend and fade away like the flick of a switch. Horn sections swirl around giant guitar chords and single note solos. In the video, footage of band members “singing” pops out of vintage train footage. It’s a perfect nod to NY public transportation, as well as a pretty comical watch. Like Pavement, the band walks that fine line between sarcasm and sincerity. All the while, they manage to leave you with a genuine feeling: a feeling like you’re not alone for this train ride.

‘Jimmy Needs The Money’ is an homage to decades past that looks towards the future. With all of their ambling rhythms and scratchy solos, Fixtures are plotting a course to follow in the footsteps of their indie rock ancestors. And we should all feel blessed to be along for their ride.

Were there any specific inspirations for the lyrics on ‘Jimmy Needs The Money?’

There was something about that verse riff that sounded kinda black and white film noir to me so I tried to make the lyrics a little more cinematic than usual. Jimmy is up to some bad shit, but I left it just open enough for interpretation/fantasy on exactly what.

How did you find the vintage train footage? Was it fun to mine through for the perfect clips?

The film’s director, Lionel Pinecone, used a bunch of public domain footage on this from The Prelinger Archives. It’s an amazing online resource with everything from government propaganda to home movies. The 7th Ave subway footage is from a 12 minute silent home movie by an unnamed person.

Six members is a lot of people, attitudes, and approaches to juggle. How do you manage that many people?

It isn’t, in my mind, possible to manage that many people in a creative project so I don’t try. We will serve the song and the live shows with whatever permutation of the lineup is present and motivated and sounding good. You have to let people’s own level of engagement manage them in an art project.

What do you hope listeners take away from the song?

I hope it makes them dance in a depressed sort of way.

What can we expect from the rest of the forthcoming full-length record, ‘Hollywood Dog’? Will the songs be in the same vein as ‘Jimmy Needs the Money’?

We aren’t the kind of band that, for better or worse, has a strictly defined style. You can expect some of the bigness of sound (especially the jam in the second half of the song) to be present on the rest of the album but I don’t think there’s another song on it that sounds like Jimmy. That being said, if you like this one I am confident you will like the rest. There’s a thread that connects all of our music. It’s not discernible to all but it’s there.
