Gruff Rhys – American Interior (2014) review

Gruff Rhys “American Interior” (Turnstile Records, 2014)
This outing follows a long and time honored tradition of
creative musical writing and lyrical interplay, going back as far as I can
remember.  And while certainly not on the
same sunny side of the street as say The Kinks, 10CC, or even Sparks, anyone
with enough musical knowledge riding in their back pockets can certainly
connect the dots.
While the music is certainly wonderful, it’s the lyrical
narrative and presentation that grabs me, almost demanding that I pay
attention, for fear that if I don’t, I’m going to miss something important and
memorable.  Fully realizing that others
are going to wave off this outing as nothing more than Super Furry Animals
cutting room floor outtakes … I can assure your, that’s hardly the case, as
Gruff Rhys moves the listener forward by setting down some familiar stepping
stones, that gently lead and morph in new directions.
Don’t get off the train yet … there are some brilliant
visions waiting ahead.
