SKiN GRAFT Records to Release ‘Sounds To Make You Shudder!’ On Vinyl

The vinyl release of ‘Sounds To Make You Shudder!’ is label’s Halloween compilation that came out in 2022 as a CD/cassette edition. It’s finally coming out on vinyl.

Years before SKiN GRAFT started releasing music, it was a punk-comic zine. In 1986, Mark Fischer & Rob Syers started publishing their own comics inspired by the Do-It-Yourself attitude of punk rock. Armed with their instruments of choice, pen and paper, the two spent countless hours hovering over self-service copy machines, running off their books in limited editions. Mark would go on to found SKiN GRAFT Records, while Rob went on to create Gumballhead The Cat, the face of Three Floyd’s Gumballhead Beer.

Label founder Mark Fischer explains “SKiN GRAFT Records grew out of a punk comic-zine that my friend Rob and I published back in the 80’s. In those days, when a comic series reached an anniversary issue, like number 100 or 250, it was celebrated with a double-sized special. Late in the summer of last year, I hit upon the idea of putting together a Halloween album for our 150th release, as a kind of “tip-of-the hat” to the cool Halloween albums I grew up with”.

“My favorite was a record called “Sounds To Make You Shiver!” The second side contained a series of isolated sound effects one after another. Noises like ‘Witch Laugh,’ ‘Breaking Windows,’ ‘Screams & Groans,’ ‘Banging Shutter,’ ‘Phantom Piano’… But it was side one that I played most often. There, after being greeted by our horror host, all of these sounds were strung together for a track called ‘A Night in a Haunted House’. Seven year old me would would just sit and listen with the album cover in his lap. Frankenstein’s monster was right up front, coming at you, behind him was a shadowy figure ambling around with a bloody ax. To the side, a skeleton rising out of a coffin. Further back – a hunchback in a clock tower which had just struck midnight, and on and on. It was a formative record for sure. I played it year round!
